For the first time, the EU summit in Brussels agreed on an extension of sanctions against Russia for not six months, but for one year, and the initiative could not be approved earlier because of the position of the then Hungarian premiere, Viktor Orban.
A spokesman for the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, announced on Thursday that the European Union is extending sanctions against Russia for the first time by 12 months instead of six, says Mrs Agerpres.
According to news agency DPA, there was also some resentment at the EU summit due to the initiative by European Council President Costa to contact the Kremlin.
