Ukraine Could Get 150 Advanced Swedish Fighter Jets Under Just-Signed Deal
The agreement could become Sweden’s largest aircraft export with up to 150 Gripen jets to bolster Ukraine’s air defense starting in 2026, officials said.
- On Oct 22, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said Sweden signed a letter of intent to sell 100 to 150 JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine after Volodymyr Zelensky visited Saab's Linkoping factory.
- Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson said the Gripen supply had been considered for two years but paused so Ukraine could focus on introducing American F-16 fighters.
- With around 280 produced to date, Saab produces the Gripen E at Linkoping and is increasing capacity to 20-30 planes per year.
- For now, Swedish officials said the letter of intent has not yet produced a formal contract, and deliveries could span 10 to 15 years while the first aircraft takes about three years.
- Kristersson said the cooperation strengthens both Sweden and Ukraine and makes the region safer, while Zelensky called the Gripen a priority and confirmed interest in joint drone production with Saab.
