UK Unemployment Rate Falls to 4.7% in June–August as Job Vacancies Slide Further, ONS Reports

Payrolls rose by 13,000 and real regular pay increased 0.8%, even as employers cut vacancies to a five-year low, the ONS said.

  • The unemployment rate fell to 4.7% in the latest quarter, down from 4.9% previously, according to the Office for National Statistics. This represents the lowest level in over a year.
  • However, the number of vacancies fell by 21,000 to a fresh five-year low of 691,000, The ONS estimates. This marked the biggest decline since the first quarter.
  • Regular earnings growth rose to 3.7% in the latest quarter, which was 0.8% higher after accounting for the Consumer Prices Index. Total pay growth has eased to its lowest rate in nearly six years.
  • Workers on payrolls increased by about 13,000 between August and September, as More timely data suggests the recent decline in payroll numbers might be starting to level off.
  • David Freeman, ONS deputy director of labour market statistics, noted the labour market remains broadly flat in 2026. While the employment rate edged up, unemployment saw a small drop during the latest quarter.
