UK Unemployment Rate Falls to 4.7% in June–August as Job Vacancies Slide Further, ONS Reports
The ONS said unemployment fell to 4.7% as vacancies dropped 21,000 to 691,000, the lowest level in five years.
The unemployment rate fell unexpectedly to 4.7% in the three months to August, beating market expectations of 5.0%, according to the Office for National Statistics .
Employment rose from 75.1% to 75.3% compared with the previous quarter, reflecting a slight tightening in the labor market despite broader economic flatness.
Vacancies fell by 21,000 to a fresh five-year low of 691,000 in the three months to September, indicating sluggish hiring demand across the economy.
ONS deputy director David Freeman said "regular wage growth remained relatively stable," though total pay including bonuses has eased to its lowest rate in nearly six years.
More timely data suggests workers on payrolls increased by about 13,000 between August and September, potentially signaling stabilization in hiring after months of sluggish growth.
