UK to deploy more soldiers and preposition ammunition in Estonia

The new force will use mobile vehicles, advanced weapons and drones as the UK says analysis showed it would outperform traditional armour.

  • On Thursday, Defense Minister Dan Jarvis visited Tallinn to sign a new defense agreement with Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, transitioning the UK's armored presence into a Mobile Anti-Armour Force equipped with highly mobile vehicles and drones.
  • The shift follows extensive wargaming with Estonia showing traditional armor is vulnerable to surveillance and precision strikes, as demonstrated in Ukraine. Jarvis said "a more mobile, agile force would have a greater effect against Russia than traditional armour."
  • Nearly 1,200 British soldiers will arrive next year "equipped with highly mobile vehicles, advanced weapons, and high-tech drones." The two countries will deepen collaboration on ASGARD, the UK's battlefield digitisation programme, to deliver combat effects faster.
  • The United Kingdom will begin pre-positioning equipment and ammunition stocks in Estonia this year, enabling the unit to "respond significantly faster in the event of a crisis" and reinforcing long-term commitment to shared security.
  • Estonian Minister Hanno Pevkur noted there is currently "no acute threat" according to security agencies, yet the roadmap ensures modernization through upgrades to the UK's Multiple Launch Rocket System and exercises by the 4th Brigade in 2027.
