UK sanctions gold and finance networks over Sudan war
The move targets 11 people and businesses linked to gold revenue, with the war in Sudan having killed 200,000 and displaced more than 11 million, officials said.
- On Thursday, Britain announced sanctions targeting 11 individuals and businesses linked to illicit gold networks financing the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan's civil war.
- The United Nations said on Wednesday that rival factions profit from a 'war economy,' while Sudan's gold production hit a 'five-year high' of 70 tonnes in 2025, fueling the conflict.
- Sudanese national Abu Dharr was targeted for financing the RSF through 'a web of real estate, conflict gold and holding companies based in Dubai,' the FCDO said, with targets also operating in Hong Kong.
- In measures designed to 'curb sources of financing for the conflict,' the European Council said on Tuesday it would ban 'the purchase, import or transfer of gold originating in Sudan.'
- Since erupting in April 2023, the war has killed 200,000 people and displaced 11 million, while the RSF faces accusations of being a 'proxy' for the UAE, which denies arming the paramilitary.
