Joseph James O'Connor ordered to pay back over £4m in Bitcoin after hacking celebrity X accounts
The UK civil recovery order targets 42 Bitcoin and other crypto assets worth £4.11 million linked to the 2020 Twitter hack scam involving celebrity accounts.
- On November 14, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service obtained a civil recovery order to seize crypto linked to Joseph James O'Connor, following a property freeze during extradition proceedings.
- Using SIM-swapping and social engineering, the hackers accessed Twitter's internal admin tools in July 2020, hijacking more than 130 accounts including Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Elon Musk, with bogus Bitcoin tweets viewed 350 million times.
- The CPS said the recovery order covers 15.23521 USDC, 42.378 BTC, 143273.5712677 BUSD, valued at £4.11 million on November 10.
- A court-appointed trustee will liquidate the assets to claw back proceeds while O'Connor serves a five-year US sentence, extending beyond his earlier $794,000 forfeiture and restitution orders.
- Under UK civil proceeds-of-crime law, the CPS said it recovered nearly £4 million over five years and returned more than £95 million to victims.
