Starmer Heading to World Leaders Summit to Mark Gaza Peace Plan
- On Monday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will travel to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, for a summit co-chaired by the US leader and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi where leaders are expected to sign a U.S.-brokered peace agreement.
- A Hamas-led surprise attack on October 7 2023 killed some 1,200 people and led to 251 hostage-takings, while Israel's offensive caused over 67,000 Palestinian deaths and nearly 170,000 wounded, the United Nations says.
- The 20-point plan expects hostages and prisoners to be released by Monday, with an international security force mainly from Arab and Muslim countries responsible for Gaza's internal security.
- Britain described the opening phase as a `historic turning point` and Starmer will urge sustained international coordination to deploy a ceasefire monitoring mission and establish transitional governance in Gaza while delivering humanitarian aid.
- With world leaders converging, US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to attend, about 200 US troops have arrived in Israel, and the Israeli military will continue defensive operations from roughly 50% of Gaza it controls.
