UK, allies warn of cyber activity by Russia targeting delivery of support to Ukraine
- The UK and its allies exposed a Russian cyberespionage campaign since 2022 targeting organizations aiding Ukraine by hacking internet-connected cameras and networks.
- This campaign, conducted by GRU Unit 26165 , aims to track and disrupt aid shipments via multiple hacking techniques including spear-phishing and exploiting software vulnerabilities.
- Investigators found over 10,000 cameras accessed near borders, military sites, and rail stations mainly in Ukraine and neighboring countries, alongside use of malware and lateral movement tools for network reconnaissance.
- Paul Chichester of the UK NCSC said the campaign "presents a serious risk" to organizations delivering assistance, while joint advisories warn anyone handling aid shipments to consider themselves targeted.
- In response, the UK announced 100 new sanctions targeting Russian weapon supply chains, while allies issued advisories to strengthen defenses against this ongoing espionage operation.
