Seven European Countries Urge ‘Immediate Halt’ to Sudan Violence
The countries warned that credible signs point to an imminent offensive as civilians face drone strikes and acute shortages of food, water and fuel.
- On Tuesday, seven European nations issued a joint statement warning of an 'imminent risk of mass atrocities' in El-Obeid, Sudan, as the Rapid Support Forces massed around the city for 12 days.
- The RSF has encircled El-Obeid from the south, west, and north, using repeated drone strikes to target residential areas, power stations, and water facilities over recent weeks.
- Residents now face severe shortages of food, medicine, and water, with prices for a barrel of drinking water reaching 25,000 Sudanese pounds as tanker operators halt transport due to security threats.
- Mohamed Refaat, Sudan chief of mission for the International Organisation for Migration, warned that without unconditional aid access, El-Obeid could reach 'tragic levels' seen in El-Fasher within one or two months.
- British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the international community cannot allow a repeat of previous atrocities, while aid agencies have suspended missions as insecurity worsens on key routes.
