Energy Bill Warning as One in Three Now Fear Falling Behind Ahead of Price Hike
A survey found 1 in 3 adults are in energy debt or fear falling behind, as the typical arrears bill reaches £750.
- Approximately one in three UK adults are in debt to energy suppliers or fear falling behind, ahead of a 13 per cent energy price cap increase from July, according to a survey by the End Fuel Poverty Coalition.
- Household energy debt has doubled to £5.5 billion in recent years and could reach £7 billion by year-end, said Ned Hammond, deputy director of customer policy at Energy UK.
- Families are resorting to drastic measures to cope, with 32 per cent using less energy, 21 per cent skipping meals, and 18 per cent turning to food banks for support.
- Simon Francis, co-ordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, stated the crisis is a "can't pay" situation, not a "won't pay" one, emphasizing households lack money for rising bills.
- Janine Michael, chief executive of the Centre for Sustainable Energy, urged the long-awaited energy debt relief scheme be brought forward urgently to provide proper debt advice for struggling households.
