UK consumers spent more on food and in pubs during World Cup in July
England’s World Cup run and warm weather lifted hospitality and retail activity, with food sales up 3.8% and pub transactions rising 10%, reports said.
- Last month, business activity returned to growth as warm weather and The World Cup boosted consumer spending, according to advisory firm BDO's latest report.
- Barclays reported consumer card spending grew 2% year on year in July, while England's World Cup run helped pub transaction volumes surge 10% and spending value rise 7.4%.
- Data from the British Retail Consortium and KPMG showed total retail sales rose 1.3% last month, driven by a 3.8% increase in food sales.
- Hospitality and leisure sectors grew 2.2%, with cinemas enjoying a 2.6% boost from The Odyssey and Toy Story 5 releases, while travel spending declined 0.3%.
- Despite the growth, BDO head of growth Scott Knight cautioned that improvements are likely "temporary, seasonal and short-lived" without greater Government support and policy certainty.
