UK brands found in ‘fast fashion graveyard’ in African conservation area

Clothes discarded by UK consumers and shipped to Ghana have been found in protected wetlands, an Unearthed and Greenpeace Africa investigation can reveal. Unearthed reporters found garments from Next, George at Asda, and Marks & Spencer in the wetlands, home to three species of sea turtles. The clothes were in, or close to, two recently-established dump sites filled with used clothing inside an internationally recognised wetland an hour outside Ghana’s capital city, Accra.

British clothing brands that end up in Ghana are languishing in newly created landfills on valuable wetlands, according to a new investigation by Unearthed in partnership with Greenpeace Africa. Local communities are warning that the growing influx of fast fashion is blocking waterways, polluting beaches and disrupting traditional fishing that is a vital source of income.
