Uganda's military chief tells hiding opposition leader to surrender

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba accused opposition elements of violence and gave Bobi Wine 48 hours to surrender, threatening to treat him as an outlaw amid disputed election tensions.

  • On Jan 20, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba wrote `I am giving him exactly 48 hours to surrender himself to the Police` and said he was praying for Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu's death.
  • Following the January 15 vote, the Electoral Commission declared President Yoweri Museveni the winner with about 7.9 million votes, but Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu rejected the results as fraudulent.
  • Meanwhile, a Friday night raid on Wine's Magere home prompted his flight to an undisclosed location after power cuts, disabled CCTV cameras and helicopters hovered above.
  • Police spokesperson Kituma Rusoke said on Monday that Wine was not being sought and police dismissed the allegations as misleading, while at least 118 National Unity Platform members were charged with election-related offences.
  • Human rights organisations have accused Ugandan security forces of excessive force, while Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, widely viewed as heir apparent, fuels international concern amid his political rise.
