Uganda Election 2026: UCC Denies Plans to Shut Down Internet
The ban aims to prevent escalation of tensions and panic by restricting live coverage and inciting content during Uganda's sensitive pre-election period, officials said.
- On Jan 5 the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology banned live broadcasts or streaming of riots and `unlawful processions` ahead of the January 15 election, the ministry said in Kampala, Uganda.
- The ministry said live coverage could escalate tensions and spread panic, and officials also prohibited circulation of material described as `inciting, hateful or violent` during the pre-election period.
- Rights group Amnesty International said Ugandan security forces launched a `brutal campaign of repression`, subjecting Wine's supporters to arbitrary arrests, beatings and torture, recalling over 50 deaths in 2021 crackdowns.
- Requests for comment went unanswered as security agencies arrested hundreds of opposition supporters while Kizza Besigye, veteran opposition figure, remains detained more than a year after his arrest.
- Museveni, who came to power in 1986, is seeking another term as authorities detained hundreds of opposition supporters ahead of the January 15 election, amid rising tensions.
