Uber Launches Robotaxis in Dallas
Uber and Avride launched a robotaxi service using Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles with safety operators in a 9-square-mile Dallas area, offering fares equal to human-driven rides.
- Starting Wednesday, Uber and Avride launched a commercial robotaxi service in Dallas covering 9 square miles, using Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles with Avride’s self-driving system.
- In October 2024, Uber joined Avride’s Dutch parent Nebius Group in a $375 million funding round and struck a multi-year deal to bring Avride robots to Uber and Uber Eats.
- Each vehicle uses 13 cameras, five lidars and four radars, Uber riders are notified in the Uber app and can accept the robotaxi or switch to a human-driven ride, and fares match human-driven trips.
- At launch, a human safety operator will sit behind the wheel and the service runs in a limited area, with fully driverless operations planned for the future.
- The fleet could grow to hundreds across Dallas, supporting Uber’s target of AVs in at least 10 cities by the end of 2026 amid Waymo's Dallas entry next year.
