Port of Churchill Owners and Dubai-Based DP World Looking to Boost Trade Route (Business)
The agreement could require up to $57 billion in investment and would link the Port of Churchill, Hudson Bay Railway and inland logistics facilities.
On Monday, Dubai-based port operator DP World Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding with Arctic Gateway Group and CentrePort Canada to explore an integrated northern transportation corridor linking the Port of Churchill, Hudson Bay Railway, and inland facilities.
Ottawa and the Manitoba government are fast-tracking the Port of Churchill expansion as a national interest project, which requires up to $57 billion in capital investments to open international trade routes with Europe and Asia.
DP World CEO Doug Smith stated the partnership aims to connect the port more effectively with the company's global logistics network; CentrePort Canada CEO Carly Edmundson noted inland ports extend seaport reach to global supply chains.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said the partnership provides a direct global market connection for Canadian products, while Federal Minister of Transport Steven MacKinnon added the accord strengthens Canada's long-term trade competitiveness.
The Port of Churchill is shipping its most diverse commodity mix ever, according to Arctic Gateway Group CEO Chris Avery, as CentrePort Canada has attracted approximately $1.5 billion in private investment in recent years.
