Romania Destroys Drones Drifting Near Offshore Gas Project
Romanian army divers detonated the drones after a civilian vessel spotted them near a gas project that is due online in 2027.
- Romanian army divers destroyed two Gerbera-type drones drifting in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project on Tuesday, Miruta said.
- Neptun Deep, jointly owned by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, is due to start production in 2027, positioning Romania as the European Union's largest gas producer.
- Defence Minister Radu Miruta confirmed Ukrainian partners verified the drones did not belong to their forces. "For the safety of the shipping lane and the works being carried out around the platform, the decision was made to carry out a controlled destruction by detonation," Miruta said.
- NATO states Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey have neutralized more than 150 drifting mines in the Black Sea, recently expanding their joint task force to protect critical infrastructure.
