Two men arrested over young soldier’s mysterious death in River Tyne
Northumbria Police are investigating whether a disturbance and a bridge collision are linked to the death of Liam Potts, 22, officials said.
On Saturday, Northumbria Police re-arrested two men, aged 22 and 23, on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of 22-year-old Liam Potts, whose body was found in the River Tyne on August 18.
Detectives are investigating whether a disturbance at The Boathouse and a subsequent collision on Wylam Bridge led to Potts entering the water; police confirmed he was not in the vehicle.
Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Rachael Rutherford said inquiries revealed Liam entered the river within minutes of the collision, adding, "We are looking to establish whether there is any link between the collision and Liam entering the water."
Potts' family remembered him as the "heart of soul of any room," while Northumbria Police urged the public to avoid speculation, noting it could impact the ongoing investigation.
The two men remain in police custody as the Major Investigation Team continues its inquiry, with authorities requesting the public respect the family's privacy during this time.
