Two healthcare workers developed symptoms after treating a confirmed case; over 120 contacts have been advised to isolate amid ongoing investigations, officials said.
- On Wednesday, a junior doctor and a nurse were admitted to Kolkata's Infectious Diseases and Beliaghata General Hospital after developing early Nipah symptoms, and their blood and nasopharyngeal swab samples were sent for testing.
- They had been treating a healthcare worker who later tested positive at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, Purba Bardhaman district, and Nipah's human-to-human transmission prompted immediate testing and isolation.
- One patient is in a coma and the other is on ventilator support, with earlier infections detected at AIIMS Kalyani and reconfirmed by National Institute of Virology, Pune, on January 11.
- Contact tracing is underway in North 24 Parganas, Bardhaman and Nadia districts, and more than 120 contacts have been told to isolate while the National Joint Outbreak Response Team supports containment, Union Minister JP Nadda said.
- On Thursday, Governor CV Ananda Bose said containment and eradication must be the government's priority as the source of the outbreak remains unidentified amid past Nipah outbreaks in West Bengal and Kerala .
