France Firefighters Hopeful, as Spain Ends National Emergency
Thousands returned home after Spain lifted remaining evacuation orders, while more than 2,200 firefighters and 20 aircraft kept battling fires across Europe.
- Two firefighters died on Wednesday battling a forest fire on the Greek island of Crete, while another was found unconscious near the Peloponnese port of Gytheio as wildfires continue burning across France, Spain, Turkey, and Greece.
- More than 3,000 firefighters are working to contain the remaining fires, supported by over 2,200 personnel and more than 20 aircraft mobilized across the continent. The Sierra Oeste wildfire in Spain has scorched around 34,000 hectares, demonstrating the scale of destruction.
