Two dead in school shooting in western Mexico; teenager arrested

  • On Tuesday, a 15-year-old student allegedly shot and killed two female teachers at the Makarenko School in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan. The shooting occurred at the private high school in the Pacific coast port city.
  • The victims were identified as Maria del Rosario, 36, and Tatiana Bedolla, 37, both teachers at the school. Security Ministry personnel seized a 5.56 millimeter caliber rifle, which El Universal reported was an AR-15.
  • Following reports of gunfire, the Civil Guard and municipal police carried out an operation at the school, according to the Security Ministry. Video footage showed the adolescent being detained by officers.
  • Authorities have not confirmed a motive for the shooting, though media reports suggest the student may have been denied entry or expelled. Michoacan is known for high levels of violence, including frequent extortion and kidnapping.
  • School shootings are rare in Mexico but not unheard of. A 2020 incident at a primary school in Torre, Coahuila involved an 11-year-old boy who killed his teacher before taking his own life.
