British Women Make History Rowing Pacific Ocean Non-Stop

  • Two British women, Jess Rowe and Miriam Payne, became the first all-female crew to row non-stop and unaided across the Pacific Ocean, completing an 8,213 nautical mile voyage from Peru to Cairns in the nine-metre vessel Velocity.
  • After an April setback with a broken rudder, Jess Rowe and Miriam Payne launched in May in Velocity and raised about 80,000 pounds for The Outward Bound Trust.
  • The pair rowed unsupported, spending around 15 hours each day at the oars and alternating two-hour sleep shifts in a tiny cabin with 400kg of freeze-dried food, a water desalinator and solar panels.
  • Even as they reached Cairns, Miriam Payne said, `The wind was way higher than forecast, we pretty much had to row into a 20-knot headwind` and `we thought we were going to have to run aground and swim to shore.`
  • Despite extreme sea conditions, Miriam Payne and Jess Rowe faced 30-foot waves, whale encounters, beacon failure, equipment breakdowns, and ran out of snacks 30 days before the finish; Payne said, `We loved every minute of it`.
