ITV's Dr Hilary Shares Way People Can Slash NHS Wait Times - Liverpool Echo
ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 13 – A survey found 55% of NHS patients are unaware they can choose hospitals outside their area to reduce waiting times, highlighting underused options for faster treatment.
- Dr Hilary Jones, a 72-year-old GP based in Kent, traveled 180 miles to a new hospital in Birmingham to have his second hip replacement.
- He used NHS Patient Choice to find a hospital with almost no waiting list, demonstrating how patients can bypass long NHS wait times by travelling.
- A survey of 1,000 adults revealed 36% are on waiting lists and 17% have waited over a year, with many willing to travel long distances for faster surgery.
- Dr Hilary explained that although Birmingham was 180 miles from his home, he chose to travel there for his procedure because the new private hospital treating NHS patients offered prompt service with a referral from his GP. He said he would gladly make the trip again to receive quicker, high-standard care and encourages others to consider this option.
- The NHS 10-year plan has renewed commitment to private sector capacity and a patient choice charter to help patients get treatment sooner and reduce waiting times.
