DRI officials seized 100 kg of methamphetamine and detained four men after a tip-off linked the alleged smuggling route to Sri Lanka.
On Friday, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested Boopalan, a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam district executive committee member and former Kilvelur Assembly in-charge, in Nagapattinam for alleged methamphetamine trafficking.
Acting on a tip-off regarding smuggling to Sri Lanka, DRI officials from Tiruchy searched residences in Prathabaramapuram and Keezhapidagai village on Friday, triggering the investigation.
Officials seized 135 kg of methamphetamine from Sugan's residence and detained Sugan, Parthiban, and Sathish for questioning; interrogation revealed Boopalan as the alleged mastermind.
Following the arrest, TVK district secretary Sugumaran announced Boopalan's expulsion from all party positions, citing the disrepute brought by these criminal allegations.
Sources indicated the contraband was transported by car from Chennai, while the DRI has not officially confirmed the total quantity seized as investigations continue.
