TV licence fee warning as £180 charge could soar to £245 under current trend
Analysts at Predictionist said repeated 3.14% rises could add almost £65 to the annual fee over the next decade.
New analysis from Predictionist suggests the annual TV licence fee could reach around £245 by 2036 if current inflation-linked increases continue, far exceeding the confirmed £180 fee set for April 1, 2026.
The fee is now linked to inflation under the current funding settlement for the BBC, causing costs to compound annually rather than rising by a fixed amount each year.
A spokesperson for Predictionist noted, "This is not a confirmed future bill, but it shows how quickly a household charge can grow when annual percentage rises keep compounding." Alternatively, using average cash increases over the past decade yields around £211 annually.
To assist households, the Government continues offering free TV licences for people aged over 75 who receive Pension Credit, while expanding its Simple Payment Plan to help those experiencing severe financial hardship.
These projections rely on historic trends and do not represent future Government policy; future fee adjustments depend on inflation, BBC funding arrangements, and decisions made after the current Charter period ends.
