Turkey asks Britain's MI6 to step up protection of Syria's Sharaa
Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization requested MI6 to increase protection for Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa amid multiple assassination attempts attributed to Islamic State, sources said.
On March 6, Turkey's intelligence agency asked MI6 last month to take a larger role protecting Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, sources said.
Militants last month stepped up attacks and declared Sharaa their 'number one foe', with sources citing rising anxiety over Islamic State plots and foiled attempts last year and in November.
A senior Syrian security source said the request followed a 'high-risk assassination plot' and MI6's role was discussed at a February 26 Damascus meeting between Ann Snow and Major General Abdulqader Tahan.
Turkish agents from the MIT secret service have asked their colleagues from Britain's MI6 to help protect Syrian President Ahmad Shah. MIT has been able to prevent several assassination attempts on him in the past year.
