Tunisia: Amnesty Denounces "Dangerous Turning Point" in Migration Policy

Amnesty International reports over 11,500 migrants collectively expelled amid racist policies and EU cooperation lacking human rights safeguards, risking complicity in abuses.

  • On Thursday, Amnesty International accused Tunisia of widespread human rights violations against migrants, including rape and torture, and said its racist policing endangers lives and dignity.
  • Long ago, racist rhetoric from President Kais Saied triggered anti-Black violence and Tunisia ended UN Refugee Agency asylum processing in June 2024, dismantling refugee protections.
  • Amnesty International found at least 70 collective expulsions involving more than 11,500 people, 24 violent sea interceptions by the Tunisian coastguard, 14 cases of sexual violence, and 41 subjected to torture or ill-treatment.
  • Actions against aid groups have detained at least eight NGO workers and two former officials since May 2024, creating a protection gap, Amnesty said, urging the European Union to suspend migration aid to avoid "risking complicity".
  • Data show the Central Mediterranean remains the deadliest route with over 1,000 deaths in 2025, while EU-Tunisia cooperation funds border forces and risks complicity without human rights safeguards.
