White House hearing on Fed's Cook delayed to December, Hassett says
Kevin Hassett said the White House and Cook’s lawyers agreed to a December meeting as the Fed governor denies wrongdoing.
The White House delayed until December the planned hearing regarding mortgage fraud allegations against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, though her lawyers on Friday declined to confirm an agreed date.
President Donald Trump has spent over a year attempting to remove Cook, a process complicated by a June Supreme Court ruling requiring he show "cause" for removal rather than firing her "at will."
Kevin Hassett, a member of the three-person committee investigating Cook, told Bloomberg on Thursday the White House seeks a "completely fair process" that places all evidence on the table before Trump decides next steps.
Cook's legal team has denied all allegations of wrongdoing, characterizing the investigation as a pretense to remove her because Trump wants the Fed to cut rates.
Trump continues to criticize the Fed Board as "political," alleging that members like Cook prevent Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh from cutting rates, widely expected to rise in December.
