Trump’s arch will harm historic sites but must proceed, federal officials say
Park Service officials said the 250-foot monument cannot avoid harming more than 40 historic sites and proposed signs, webpages and construction limits as mitigation.
- The administration plans to build a 250-foot-tall Triumphal Arch in Memorial Circle near Arlington National Cemetery, prompting warnings that the towering structure will overshadow the cemetery and disrupt the solemn corridor to the Lincoln Memorial.
- National Park Service officials wrote Tuesday that "adverse effects cannot be fully avoided," yet the project must proceed because the location is "central to the undertaking," according to an NPS document.
- Senior NPS official Tammy Stidham requested preservationists sign the agreement by 12 p.m. on Monday. Officials proposed creating new signs and webpages to mitigate impacts, though the administration does not require consent to proceed.
- Charles Birnbaum of the Cultural Landscape Foundation criticized the administration for "overt hostility to public input and the regulatory process." He warned the project will permanently disfigure one of the nation's most symbolic cultural landscapes.
- Officials hope to submit the project to the National Capital Planning Commission by November. Trump maintains the 250-foot structure is necessary to mark the nation's 250th anniversary, which was celebrated this year.
