Ag Secretary Points to Poultry and Eggs as Options for Consumers Facing High Beef Costs
Rollins said cheaper beef is coming soon as she urged Americans to choose other proteins and noted beef is up almost 30% under Biden.
On Monday, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins advised Americans to "Eat chicken, pork, salmon, eggs" as alternatives to beef during an appearance on The Benny Show, citing high grocery costs.
Ground beef prices reached a record average of $7.16 per pound in August, a 7.9% increase over the previous year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
President Donald Trump authorized up to 331,000 tons of duty-free beef imports over 90 days to curb costs, though United States Cattlemen's Association President Justin Tupper opposed the policy.
Critics ridiculed Rollins on social media, noting that costs for eggs and pork also increased recently by 4.3% and 0.4% respectively, undermining her alternative protein recommendation.
Cost-of-Living concerns remain critical for voters ahead of midterms, as politicians continue trading blame over inflation and domestic cattle herd management policies.
