Trump weighs buying Chagos Islands to secure base
The White House is weighing a direct deal for Diego Garcia as Mauritius says it has not been approached and pricing remains unclear.
The White House is weighing the purchase of the Chagos Islands from Mauritius to secure the Diego Garcia military base, according to reports from Monday. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent presented the proposal to President Donald Trump.
President Trump previously criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's plan to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands as a 'big mistake,' prompting the United Kingdom to pause the transfer in April.
Diego Garcia serves as a critical logistics hub for the United States, supporting about 2,400 military and civilian personnel and located about 3,800km from Iran with long-range missile capabilities.
Mauritius stated on Monday that it has not received any proposal from the United States, emphasizing that its sovereignty over the Chagos Islands remains 'non-negotiable.'
Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, suggested a long-term lease may be more realistic than an outright purchase, which would require congressional authorization.
