Trump to Host Syrian President in Historic White House Visit

  • On Saturday, United States Special Envoy Tom Barrack said Damascus's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa is expected to travel to Washington to sign an agreement joining the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.
  • Since seizing power last December, Sharaa has made foreign trips to rebuild ties, including a May meeting with US President Donald Trump as his transitional government seeks recognition.
  • The United States has been collaborating with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces to fight Islamic State, and SDF leader Mazloum Abdi said last month they reached a preliminary integration deal with Damascus.
  • A Syrian source said the US is pushing for a security agreement with Israel to be agreed by the time Sharaa visits Washington, expected within two weeks, Barrack revealed.
