Trump told Putin he wants swift end to Ukraine war and US-Russia ties restored, Kremlin says
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said he had a "great" conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier in the week, claiming Putin wants to make a deal to end the war in Ukraine.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner recently returned from a diplomatic swing through Moscow and Kyiv, where they discussed potential proposals to bring the war to a close.
Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One that the primary holdup involves two people who hate each other, referring to Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
"He is wanting to make a deal, and if Zelenskiy is wanting to make a deal, that'd be very nice," Trump said while en route to Dallas for the Republican National Convention.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, intelligence officials in the U.S., Ukraine, and Europe remain skeptical that Putin is seriously interested in ending the ongoing war, now in its fourth year.
