Trump quietly appoints 4 members to commission that will review his White House ballroom plan
James McCrery, former project lead, joins the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts amid a $400 million ballroom review and ongoing lawsuit to halt construction.
- Thursday, President Donald Trump quietly appointed four new members to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, disclosed in a court filing related to the White House ballroom project.
- After Mr. Trump dismissed six commissioners in October, the Commission of Fine Arts was left largely vacant while the National Trust for Historic Preservation sued to halt construction.
- One appointee is James McCrery, architect and founder of McCrery Architects, who led the now $400 million White House ballroom project until replaced last year and served on the Commission of Fine Arts from 2019–2024.
- The National Capital Planning Commission heard an initial presentation on Jan. 8 and White House officials will file a final submission on Jan. 30, with a final vote expected March 5 and CFA review by March 19; aboveground construction may start in April.
- Critics said the appointments aimed to install loyalists, while Jessica Bowron and court filings show donated funds were transferred to the Executive Residence, which manages the project, with NPS stating `NPS determined that it was in the best interests of the United States for EXR to contract for and directly manage the Project`.
