Trump Mocks Popularity of the Name Mohammad, Common Among Muslims
Trump mocked Middle Eastern names while joking that Mohammad is one of the most common male names among Muslims, drawing criticism from advocacy groups.
On Friday, President Donald Trump joked about the popularity of the name "Mohammad" while mocking Iran's presidency during a campaign rally at Dalton Municipal Airport in Dalton, Georgia.
Trump made the remarks while discussing Iran, seven months after the United States and Israel launched a war on Tehran aimed at crippling its nuclear program.
"You know, if you're in doubt about somebody's name from the Middle East, just say 'Mohammad,'" Trump told the Dalton crowd, claiming a 65 per cent chance; the audience gave the joke a muted response.
Rights advocates and the Council on American Islamic Relations criticized Trump for rhetoric they say demonizes Muslims, with a report earlier this year attributing rising Islamophobia in the United States to his policies.
Trump has escalated such rhetoric against Muslim Americans during the midterm campaign, targeting Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat.
