Trump vs. BBC: The $10-Billion Defamation Clash
The broadcaster says the trust refused to provide records on holdings, assets and tax returns as it seeks to dismiss the defamation suit.
On Friday, the Financial Times reported that President Donald Trump's legal team refused to provide financial information sought by the BBC in his $10 billion defamation lawsuit, citing court filings.
The lawsuit, filed in Florida late last year, alleges the BBC defamed Trump in a 2024 documentary by splicing speech clips to falsely portray him as inciting the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Seeking to assess financial impact, the BBC subpoenaed the Trump Revocable Trust, managed by Donald Trump Jr., for records covering nearly 400 entities, but the trust has refused to produce the documents.
Trump's lawyers requested a stay on discovery, citing an "appearance of impropriety" regarding Magistrate Judge Enjolique Lett, while the BBC argues the case should be dismissed because Trump's reelection proves his reputation was not harmed.
Court filings indicate the delay appears to be the trust's "flat refusal" to provide financial information; although the BBC apologized for the edit, it maintains the lawsuit is meritless and actively seeks dismissal.
