Trump sets up committee to investigate, potentially remove the Fed's Lisa Cook
The committee will examine mortgage-related allegations and report whether there is cause for Cook’s removal, after a Supreme Court setback for the administration.
On Friday, President Donald Trump established a "committee of inquiry" to investigate whether Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made "false statements in connection with one or more mortgage instruments," the White House announced.
This move marks the latest escalation in Trump's prolonged effort to remove Cook, a nominee of former President Joe Biden, from the central bank's board after the Supreme Court previously blocked his attempt for lacking due process.
The committee "shall investigate the allegations against Governor Cook and report to me whether there is 'cause' for Governor Cook's removal," Trump wrote in a memo, claiming he must fire subordinates who "cannot be trusted to tell the truth."
Following an inspector general finding, the Justice Department will not reopen a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve renovations, an avenue previously considered to remove former Chair Jerome Powell from the central bank.
Trump has persistently sought to remove Cook from her post while simultaneously pursuing an ill-fated push to force the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, continuing his ongoing conflict with the central bank.
