Trump administration plans to break up largest federal climate research center

On Tuesday night, Russ Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, announced that the National Science Foundation will break up the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.
Vought said a `comprehensive review` is underway and that `any vital activities such as weather research will be moved to another entity or location`, citing broader budget cuts and the cancellation of nearly 750 jobs.
About 750 scientists and support personnel work at the National Center for Atmospheric Research , founded in 1960 at the Boulder site, which houses laboratories and provides data for severe weather events.
Gov. Jared Polis said, `Colorado has yet to receive information about the Trump administration’s intentions to pull funding for freight rail safety and to try to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research, a global leader in earth system science, promoting scientific breakthroughs that support national security and the economy`, and Democrats vowed to oppose the plan.
Analysts caution that dismantling NCAR would compromise weather predictions and hurricane tracking, posing a major setback for the U.S. climate research community and national disaster preparedness.
