Trudy strengthens to a hurricane as system nears Mexico’s coast with major storm expected
On Thursday, Trudy intensified into a Category 1 hurricane about 300 miles southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center reported.
The storm approaches a Mexican coastline already impacted by recent heavy rains from hurricanes Polo, Rachel, and Simon, which left behind severe flooding and several deaths in the region.
Forecasters expect Trudy to "rapidly intensify" into a major hurricane on Friday, bringing 4 to 8 inches of rainfall across Colima and Jalisco states through the weekend.
Mexican authorities and the NHC warned that swells generated by Trudy will cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the southwestern coast over the coming days.
The eastern Pacific sets a record for the busiest storm season, with accumulated cyclone energy of 331 surpassing the previous full-season record of 318 set in 2018.
