Trudeau pledges Canada’s support for Ukraine and punishment for Russia
- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will impose costs on Russia and establish a working group with G7 partners to study seizure and forfeiture of Russian assets, including from the Russian Central Bank. Canada also added 63 Russian individuals and entities to its sanctions list for their involvement in crimes such as child kidnapping and spreading disinformation.
- In addition to imposing sanctions, Canada will provide Ukraine with 50 armored vehicles, including armored medical evacuation vehicles, and a financial contribution to a U.K.-led consortium delivering air defense equipment. Canada’s support will continue into the 2024 fiscal year and include measures to improve cyber resilience.
- Prime Minister Trudeau expressed solidarity with Ukraine, condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion. He emphasized the importance of defending democracy and ensuring that those responsible for the invasion do not benefit from it.
