Proposed Law Would Require Life Vest For All Boaters After Black Yacht Weekend Drowning

TROUP COUNTY, GEORGIA, JUL 16 – Troup County officials highlight that 11 of 12 drownings at West Point Lake involved no life jackets, urging their use even for strong swimmers to prevent further deaths.

CITY HALL — Weeks after the drowning of 27-year-old stylist Zahrie Walls, Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th) is pushing for a law that would make life vests a requirement for anyone boarding a boat. Coleman introduced the ordinance during Wednesday’s City Council session. The proposed law would apply to all boaters on all vessels, from sailboats to personal watercraft.
