Tropical Depression Nine Forms in Gulf as Coastal Impacts Become Likely
- On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, the National Hurricane Center designated a disturbance in the southwestern Gulf as Invest 92L, with meteorologists expecting it to organize into Tropical Storm Isaias by midweek.
- Warm Gulf waters are fueling the disturbance, though AccuWeather hurricane expert Nicholas Arman warns that increasing wind shear near the northern Gulf Coast could disrupt the system's organization.
- Forecasters project widespread rainfall of 3–7 inches across the northern Gulf Coast, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 10 inches, alongside damaging wind gusts to coastal communities this weekend.
- The National Weather Service issued flood watches for northeastern Florida and Camden County, Georgia, while experts caution that persistent onshore winds could trigger dangerous storm surge in low-lying coastal areas.
- If Isaias strengthens, it would end more than 340 days without a hurricane in the Atlantic; the 2026 season has been remarkably quiet due to El Niño conditions, marking the latest start for a hurricane since satellite tracking began in 1966.
