Tropical Storm Chantal forms off the Southeast Coast
SOUTH CAROLINA COAST, JUL 5 – Tropical Depression Three is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Chantal, bringing up to 6 inches of rain and 1-2 feet of storm surge along the South Carolina coast, officials said.
- On Friday evening, Tropical Depression Three developed near the coasts of Florida and Georgia and is expected to intensify into Tropical Storm Chantal by Saturday, with a probable landfall close to Charleston early Sunday.
- This development comes as the system becomes better organized, with Hurricane Hunters confirming a closed circulation and sustained winds of 35 mph roughly 150 miles to the south-southeast of Charleston, as it moves slowly northward.
- Tropical Storm Watches are in place from Edisto Beach to Little River Inlet along much of the South Carolina coast, where gusty winds, tropical storm conditions, and storm surge of 1 to 2 feet are possible.
- Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches with isolated amounts up to 6 inches is expected mainly in the Carolinas, accompanied by heavy rainfall impacting Florida through Saturday, and elevated rip current risks persist over the holiday weekend.
- The storm should weaken after landfall Sunday afternoon, with most impacts remaining in the Carolinas and minimal effects expected inland, including a possible stray shower in north Georgia.
