Trio of men's singles players retire because of injury at the US Open
Seven male players retired due to injuries during the 2025 U.S. Open, continuing a trend of increasing retirements at major tennis Grand Slam tournaments this year.
- On Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, Flavio Cobolli, Daniel Altmaier and Kamil Majchrzak retired mid-match during the third round at the U.S. Open in New York.
- Earlier in the tournament, Sebastian Korda and Shang Juncheng retired in the first round, and Jack Draper withdrew before his second match; Grand Slams have seen similar retirements, including five at Wimbledon, six plus two walkovers at the French Open, and nine at the Australian Open.
- Facing Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, of Italy, reported right arm issues and said, 'I knew at the beginning of the match that I was at my limit, and I played a lot of hours in those few days and I didn't recover like I wanted'.
- Ben Shelton withdrew mid-tournament due to a left shoulder injury, and hours later Novak Djokovic overcame a back problem to beat Cam Norrie on Friday, becoming the oldest man at 38 to reach the U.S. Open fourth round since 1991.
- At the U.S. Open, organizers have also recorded seven men's retirements due to injury and two women's retirements: Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in round one and Eva Lys in round two.
