Rebel TMC MPs to Merge with Nationalist Citizen Party; Claim on Trinamool Name, Symbol Likely in July
Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said the rebel group has more than two-thirds support and will seek separate seating in the Lok Sabha.
On Sunday, June 14, 2026, 20 rebel Trinamool Congress MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to announce their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party and support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
Internal divisions have plagued the All India Trinamool Congress since the party lost West Bengal Assembly elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party, with expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee claiming 58 legislators challenge Mamata Banerjee's leadership.
Dastidar stated these 20 MPs constitute more than two-thirds of the AITC's total strength in the Lower House, with the group submitting a letter requesting separate seating arrangements from Birla.
TMC parliamentary party leader Abhishek Banerjee urged Speaker Birla not to recognize the breakaway group, warning the party reserves the right to initiate proceedings under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution against members.
The rebel faction intends to demand the Trinamool Congress name in July, citing their two-thirds majority support, following the party's June 3 decision to dissolve all state committees for a 'comprehensive' review.
