Knife in Hand, Woman Claiming to Be Mamata Banerjee’s Niece Allegedly Tries to Enter Security Cordon
The party says the woman was armed with a knife and under the influence of drugs, and it has sought police scrutiny of the security breach.
On Tuesday, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee allegedly faced an attempted knife attack outside her Kalighat residence as she returned from a Durga Puja inauguration, the Trinamool Congress reported.
The party identified the suspect as Tannishtha Saha, who allegedly claimed to be a civic volunteer. Bystanders restrained Saha after she reportedly wielded a knife, hurled abuses, and lay on the street.
Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen reported the incident to the Kalighat police station, requesting the matter be recorded under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The party submitted photographs and videos as evidence.
Former TMC leader Saket Gokhale called the event "shocking news" on X and questioned how the individual breached the Z-plus security perimeter of Banerjee's residence.
Authorities have detained the accused, who allegedly claimed to be Banerjee's niece during the confrontation. The incident occurred during the Durga Puja season, heightening scrutiny of security protocols.
