The case joins others in a disturbing pattern seen since October 7, namely, Iranian intelligence operatives attempting to recruit Israelis through Telegram and other encrypted platforms.
The defendant admitted as part of a plea agreement that he documented state institutions while holding a sign that read: "Where do you think the next target is?" In exchange for the photographs, he received payment to a digital wallet. He also installed an app on his phone that allowed an agent to remotely control the camera, and was asked to set fire to a forest near Rehovot.
A 16.5-year-old minor from the Sheflera admitted that he had been in contact with an Iranian agent for several months and carried out missions for him in return for payment.
