Met Office Issues 'Danger to Life' Warning as Storm Ingrid Set to Batter UK

Storm Ingrid is expected to cause flooding and travel delays with up to 40mm of rain and gusts reaching 60mph, impacting coastal and inland areas, Met Office warns.

  • On Friday, January 23 the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for parts of south Wales and the south west of England, including Newport and Pembrokeshire, from 2am on Friday until 9am on Saturday, as Storm Ingrid brings heavy rain and strong winds.
  • Because the ground is already saturated, an early-morning band of rain could drop 10–20mm in a few hours, followed by 15–20mm widely by Saturday morning, with some places seeing 30–40mm.
  • Forecasters warn that strong winds and very large waves will affect coastal routes and seafronts, with inland gusts of 45–50mph and coastal winds up to 60mph, causing delays to transport and possible short-term power cuts.
  • Local communities face possible road and business flooding, especially in west Dorset; drivers should follow Environment Agency advice and call 999 for the Coastguard in emergencies.
  • Following Storm Goretti, the Met Office warns Ingrid will affect largely the same area though is not predicted to be as strong, forecasters expect conditions to ease by Saturday morning.
