Transformer blast injures four in Bengaluru

Bescom said it will pay the medical bills of all five injured people as police investigate the transformer burst and RMU explosion.

  • Five people were injured in two separate electrical equipment explosions in Bengaluru. A transformer burst at Benniganahalli on October 6, and a Ring Main Unit exploded near Bagaluru Cross on October 7, injuring pedestrian Mohammed Afroz.
  • The Bagaluru Cross incident resulted from a 3-way RMU CT flashover, an electrical arc occurring around the current transformer inside the unit. Bescom officials noted such bursting incidents are rare in the medium-voltage power distribution network.
  • During the Benniganahalli transformer explosion near the Coca Cola godown, four individuals—Narayana, 50; Azeem Pasha; Chethan, 23; and Lakshmi, 22—sustained injuries. All victims from both incidents are undergoing hospital treatment.
  • Ramamurthy Nagar and Yelahanka police have launched separate investigations into both incidents. Bescom officials confirmed they will visit injured persons and bear all medical treatment expenses.
  • Technical officials stated they are monitoring the situation on the ground following the explosions. The incidents highlight safety concerns within Bengaluru's electrical infrastructure as investigations continue.
